Chair’s Welcome Message
It is my privilege to welcome you to Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s international conference, "AI Ethics: The Convergence of Technology and Diverse Moral Traditions" — a groundbreaking forum bringing together global experts, thought leaders, policymakers, industry pioneers, academic researchers and scholars to explore the ethical dimensions of AI as envisioned by diverse moral traditions worldwide.
In an era where AI has moved from futuristic promise to everyday reality, its profound impact presents an inseparable mix of extraordinary benefits and serious ethical challenges. Addressing these challenges is not merely a mathematical calculation of technical benefits and harms; it is a complex ethical imperative that demands interdisciplinary dialogue across fields and moral traditions. This conference seeks to provide a vital platform for such engagement.
Structured around six major themes — AI in healthcare, security, urban design, finance, work, and education — the program addresses pressing issues ranging from bias in medical decision-making and surveillance ethics to social justice in smart cities and transparency in financial systems. Across these domains, we seek to chart actionable paths where technology and diverse moral frameworks converge on equal footing.
Through keynote sessions, thematic panels, and interactive roundtables, we aspire to foster a global dialogue that shapes policies, practices, and innovations resonating far beyond this conference. We ask: How can emerging technologies serve the public good, safeguard human dignity, and reflect the richness of global moral traditions, including those rooted in diverse moral traditions?
Join us for this transformative dialogue. Together, we can harness AI’s potential to advance societies while honoring the moral traditions that bind us. We look forward to welcoming you to a future where technology, ethics, and humanity meet for the greater good.
Sincerely, Dr. Mohammed Ghaly Professor of Islam and Biomedical Ethics Head, Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) College of Islamic Studies (CIS) Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU)
