In today’s world of instantaneous global communication, traditional and alternative media are raising serious ethical questions about the values, conduct and objectives of media.
Media outlets are assessing their codes of ethics regarding accountability of journalists, the ever present economic pressures, anonymity on the internet, the use of social media and speed and accessibility of communication.
Owing to the the dizzying speed of its global reach and the ever-changing role of journalists and ordinary citizens with access to alternative media, it is important to develop a relevant code of ethics for the field. Because this is ultimately about communication, in the broarder sense, with fellow human beings contributions from an Islamic perspective are not only important but are absolutely necessary.
Journalists, specialists and scholars of the media can provide invaluable input to the scholars of the text/Shari’a as they exert greater efforts to better understand the higher objectives of Islam in this complex field.
CILE will provide the intellectual, spiritual and creative space necessary for this collaborative effort by organizing three-day seminars that bring the scholars of the texts and contexts together. From this collaboration, we aim to develop ethical guidelines to address the challenges in this important field.
