CILE will host a public lecture at University of Oxford

CILE Experts To Lead Discussion About Women and Men in Religious And Ethical Thought

 

The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), a member of Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS) in Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is set to host its final public lecture for the current academic year at St Antony's College, University of Oxford, in the UK.

Taking place on Wednesday May 20th , 2015, the ‘Religious and Ethical Thought: Towards an Alternative Approach’ lecture will address the research area of gender studies, in addition to discussing and analysing the nature, roles, and responsibilities of men and women. It will also present an alternative ethical approach, taking into consideration the challenges and complexity of our contemporary era.

Through its membership of QFIS in HBKU, which is a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), CILE supports QF’s mission to enhance cultural life in Qatar by renewing contemporary Islamic legal and ethical thought and behaviour to address contemporary challenges.

A group of prominent Islamic theology scholars and experts of Gender Studies will participate in the lecture. They include: Dr Sheikh Mohamed El-Tahir El-Mesawi, Associate Professor at Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University of Malaysia; Dr Ziba Mir-Hosseini, Professorial Research Associate at the Centre for Islamic and Middle Eastern Law, University of London; Dr Ruqaia Jabir Al Ulwani, Associate Professor, University of Bahrain; Dr Terrell Carver, Professor of Political Theory, University of Bristol, UK; and Dr Tariq Ramadan, CILE Director and Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies, University of Oxford.

The moderator of this lecture will be Dr Mawahib Bakr, CILE Business Support Manager, who holds a PhD in Gender Studies from York University in Canada.

The lecture will take place alongside a closed seminar entitled ‘Islamic Ethics and Gender Issues’, and feature a distinguished group of Islamic theology scholars, as well as experts in gender issues.

By engaging this group, CILE attempts to explore the relationship between Fiqh and ethics, law and the Higher Objectives (Maqasid) in order to revive the role of ethics in contemporary scholarship, and contribute towards a sustainable ethical framework in addressing global challenges.
