CILE/CIS Recruiting Two Visiting Research Professors (Fall 2021)

The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) is recruiting two visiting research professors to enrich CILE’s research ventures by organizing interdisciplinary seminars on topics related to the interplay of Islamic ethics and the applied fields noted above. Applicants for the positions should prepare a research plan on a specific theme of his/her choice.  

Qualifications & Tasks

  • The ideal candidates for these positions will be specialists in Islamic ethics or related fields within Islamic studies showing evidence of high quality research activity – such as a strong peer reviewed publication record.
  • Experience in teaching one or more of the courses listed below, or courses similar.
  • Minimum of bilingual excellence. In order to be able to manage the research-related activities, the prospective visiting research professors should demonstrate proficiency in at least English and Arabic.

The candidates will stay in Doha throughout the Fall semester 2021.

The tasks of the selected candidates will include: (a) research (b) teaching and (c) service.

  • Research: Applicants should provide a draft “research plan” to work on during his/her visit. The plan should lead to at least one peer-reviewed publication. Preference will be given to publication plans that are within the scope of the CILE Journal of Islamic Ethics (JIE), or the book-series Studies in Islamic Ethics, both published by Brill.  
  • Teaching: In coordination with the Program Coordinator, the visiting research professors may (co-)teach one of the courses in the Applied Islamic Ethics program. Examples include:
    • Scriptural Ethics,
    • Peace, War and Political Ethics,
    • Gender and Islamic Ethics,
    • Business Ethics.
  • Service: Besides conducting research and teaching, the selected candidates will be asked to participate in other related activities, especially serving on committees entrusted with various tasks, such as reviewing submitted research proposals, articles or book manuscripts, and assist in organizing activities such as the CILE International Conference, CILE Summer / Winter School, etc.
