Professor Emeritus of Islamic Studies in the School of Religion and Theology, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa. His interests include Islamic law and bioethics, and he has written numerous articles on Islamic bioethical issues. He has traveled widely delivering papers at international conferences on bioethics. He is author of Abortion, Birth Control and Surrogate Parenting: an Islamic Perspective published by American Trust Publications, Indiana, USA in 1989 and Organ Transplantation, Euthanasia, Cloning and Animal Experimentation: An Islamic View published by Islamic Foundation, Leicester, UK in 2001. He holds a B.A. in Islamic Studies from the Aleemiyah Institute of Islamic Studies, Karachi, Pakistan; a B.Th. from Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt; M.A. and Ph.D. in Religion with specialization in Islamic Studies from Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. His doctoral thesis was titled “Islamic Ethics and the Implications of Modern Biomedical Technology: An Analysis of Some Issues Pertaining to Reproductive Control, Biotechnical Parenting and Abortion” (1986).
