War and Armed Conflict Ethics in Islamic Scholarship: Historical Insights and Modern Challenges

War and Armed Conflict Ethics in Islamic Scholarship

Hosted by the Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), in collaboration with the College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), this symposium explores the ethical dimensions of armed conflict through both contemporary interdisciplinary perspectives and the rich intellectual legacy of Islamic scholarship.

The discussion will address two central themes:
(A) Modern Ethical Questions and Challenges, examining issues across disciplines such as war ethics, international law, political science, humanitarian studies, and philosophy; and
(B) Towards an Islamic Ethical Framework, engaging with classical Islamic scholarship, including jurisprudence, theology, and political thought, to explore enduring insights on the justification, conduct, and aftermath of war.

By engaging with key questions surrounding the legitimacy of warfare, the treatment of non-combatants, technological advancements, and post-conflict justice, the seminar aims to foster a deeper understanding of how classical Islamic ethical frameworks can inform contemporary discussions on morality, justice, and responsibility in times of conflict.

Date: November 18 - 19, 2025

Location: Minaretein, Education City
